With the increase of the converter-based generation units, there have been few challenges that were not addressed before. One such challenge is the ability of the converter-based generation unit to keep synch. with the grid and provide it with the required active and reactive power. so how can we start with the GFM and GFL?.
This is an open discussion for all researchers to mention past, current, and future challenges. and solutions. What is your idea of grid-forming and grid-following converters?

As foreseeable in the near future both will be required and with the change in duties on the basis of applications. Say for instance if the grid has number of micro-grids, under normal operation these are independently managing the systems for load-generation balancing, but at the periphery may be the converters that are assets, just not merely to convert dc to ac, will have control functions for reactive power to maintain not only voltage at the tail-end, but also in need transacting via grid active power in either direction from one micro-grid to the other.

Thank you Prof. Subrata Mukhopadhyay for clarifying what we are going to do in this direction. However, many issues remain unclear. For inverter-based resources, would it be better to re-think from the beginning what are the needs of a stable and well-regulated grid?
Really these are issues, our system being dynamic. Every instant of time we have to match supply and demand as observed from the heart of Power System by sensing frequency system-wide and then for quality obviously voltage, and harmonics so long we are mostly with ac. Earlier we were always rather mostly avoiding storage and now paying attention to it, through besides Pumped Storage Hydro with large-scale Battery Systems. For stability system has to be resilience always, provided you have adequate resources. The same thing applies to regulation too; you must have something in your hand to play with. But overall techno-economic viability, (optimum / economic installation and economic / optimum usage), affordability, etc. would be the overall guiding factors.
