A part of almost 18Kgs is being forged from AISI 8640 Steel. Details of manufacturing process are as follows 1. Input material for forging is rolled billet of 110mm Diameter having reduction ratio of 5.5 and ASTM 4 grain size . 2. After close die forging part is being heat treated and the process is Normalizing i.e heating to the temperature of 850 C and soaking for 30min then cooled in air. After normalizing the grain size is ASTM 2-3, I want to reduce grain size upto ASTM 6-8 Grain size. Kindly suggest a some heat treatment process to reduce grain size. Also give your opinion about input material reduction ratio and its effect on product grain size. Please also suggest best suitable reduction ratio for hot forging process in order to control grain size. Your expert suggestions are awaited. Regards Qamar
