Traffic congestion in cities especially during 'rush hours' has led to increased call for government intervention to provide a solution. Mass Transit systems have often been tabled as one and with it comes questions on its suitability. As expected such an idea is welcomed by city planners and "experts" while unpopular amongst city residents as it is deemed inflexible.
Is Mass Transit System the answer? Why?. Are there any better alternatives?
This is a big question. The debate has been going on for at least decades.
The reason for the traffic congestion is the lack of coordinated planning by the government, as the increase in the number of cars does not match the carrying capacity of the streets, and in terms of the lack of strict regulations that limit the import of cars. As for mass transportation, it is not widely accepted because of the scheduling of its work and the presence of large numbers inside This causes a lot of inconvenience to people, especially in countries with high population density
It should be a comprehensive solution. The spatial, the social, the political, the cultural, among others, must be considered. I have been working on the issue of underground space and it has been proven that transportation systems that use the subsoil (subway) contribute to the proper functioning of the city. This helps to free up the surface for public uses.
However, a systemic planning is necessary to not only solve the functionality but also the acceptance of the user.
Mass Transit may not be the only solution as it will lead to other city challenges such as crime and congestion. The decentralization of functions to minimize city commuters, development of urban nodes with a smart city concept where peaple can leave and work and promoting walkable distances to access amenities and job opportunities.
