I recommend looking into this study, Article Environmental Perceptions of Gifted Secondary School Student...

It looks at the Type III Model that intervenes with gifted students at a higher level. They address the fact that many schools offer accelerated programs for gifted students. I learned a lot from the study. Also, if you haven't read this textbook yet, I recommend reading Barbara Clark's Growing Up Gifted. It was my class textbook, and it gave me many strategies that I can implement with gifted learners. In addition, it gives much background knowledge on gifted learners, how their brain works, testing, the social-emotional aspect, and advocation for gifted learners. I hope that helps!

Differentiated curriculum and instruction are the best options to satisfy gifted children. So, we all should adhere to these strategies to help gifted children to flourish to the fullest.

I recommend you read E.D. Hirsch, Daisy Christodoulou, and Daniel Willingham for a diametrically opposite view of boosting the reading comprehension of anyone, whether gifted or not. According to them, the best way to advance a great reader is to provide a variety of reading materials in subject domain areas: fiction, and non-fiction in the realms of history, civics, geography, etc. It is through lots of reading of different texts with interesting subjects that students learn vocabulary, literary devices, and analysis. Of course, the teacher would have to model those items in class while the class progresses in its reading together. Individualized learning (except in a one-on-one tutoring/teaching scenario) would not be advised. Good luck.

I have been advising thesis writers and been s statistician for the research of my graduate students. First I would like to verify if you have Identified already your gifted students? If you have Identified them then all you have to do next is to make an inventory on their interests of the variety of topic/ issues of concerns so that you can apply differentiated reading material for reading intended for gifted children. You can group them ex. reading materials in science fiction and non fiction; reading materials about nationalism and patriotism and reading materials about business and economics. You have to control the number of reading materials as a limitation of your study because the number of students you have will also matter. You can ask all of them to read all these three materials to check if what they revealed in the reading interest inventory is consistent. Differentiated instruction will come in. Individualized may apply because gifted students can do a lot in their own. The teacher will only facilitate the child learning from what he/she reads.

As Crisanto Pancito has stated, the teacher will then only facilitate the child learning from what he/she reads. The reading of quality literature by the child is interaction with the ideas and minds of great thinkers of the past and present. The teacher should facilitate by being available for discussion, and ready to help the child source more books on the chosen topic/author. The child should not be required to always finish a book, but only take what he needs from it. Also, if a student wishes to read the same subject or author for weeks or months, he should be left to do so, as this is when deep learning will take place (When the child has self-motivation and passion for a subject). The learning of grammar and new vocabulary will happen naturally and incidentally.
