I have been following the development of bioluminescent biosensors for 20 years. Hundreds or thousands of scientific papers have been published by using recombinant organisms with good sensitivity, ease of use and low cost for detection of different toxic compouds. It has been very strange to see that genetically modified food has entered our plates but still the legislation prohibits biosensor use very strictly. It is very difficult to plan any commercial applications based on bacterial biosensors because it is practically impossible to transport these tests to locations not having GMO use permission, specified laboratory and trained personel. Additionally, insurance companies are not able to determine the theoretical risk and therefore pricing for transportation is impossible. Those who are working with this topics, please comment if you agree/disagree!
