Experiments in physics are more and more heavy, and require more and more people. There is a similar, although not as important, trend in theoretical physics. Will that change the status of the physicist? Will there still be great /savants/ or scholars?
But on the other hand, the last particle of the standard model, the Higgs, has been observed, and has validated the whole construct, so there is no more such routine work. There have not been significant advances in fundamental physics for forty years. It seems the old paradigm has been exhausted. There is still research to find supersymmetry particle and the likes, but that remains speculative. Wouldn't a reorganization of the activity be necessary? Should more stress on individual potentially revolutionary ideas be put, or to the contrary should the current trend be intensified in order to force our way forward?
