“Non-Funded Agreements” (NFAs) generally refer to research-related contracts with collaborating entities that convey no funding to the University and that must be institutionally reviewed, negotiated as needed and signed by the Office of Sponsored Programs. These agreements are increasing in terms of volume, complexity and significance to the UVA research enterprise. Some examples of NFAs include (but are not limited to) Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs), Teaming Agreements, Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs), Material Transfer Agreements (MTAs) and Data Use Agreements (DUAs).
Externally funded research seems trammelled by intentions of creating potential impact relevant to government and business needs, while university institutional preoccupations appear to be focused as much on revenue-generation as they are generating knowledge.
Funded studies will have specific deadlines for submission and evaluation of reports. But without funding, this study can take a very long time, as a result of which it will become irrelevant by the time of completion.
This is a very important issue. I think non-funded research must lead at some point to a possibility of having funding. Nobody can work for ever for free:
funded research is time bound and one needs to complete and submit thesis within the stipulated time as per guide lines of the funding agency. It motivates the scholar and indirectly puts pressure on him to finish on time. Also the scholar morally gets bound to complete the thesis as availed funds from an external agency.
On the other hand, non-funding research is open for every one interested to do research. There is no hard and fast time limit nor does have any pressure on the researcher. Slowly but steadily s/he takes time to complete the thesis for submission adding all inputs in terms of quality research.
Funded research depends on the originality of research more than unfunded research
Often industrial, agricultural and pharmaceutical companies are interested in developing their reality by funding research to increase production or discover a new drug
This is right that non-funded research has much liberty to think independently.
But the problem that I feel in non funded research is that if I need some Experiment to perform, there are problems to get access to a laboratory facility and also problems due to lack of money.
