As you know, one way to tackle water & wastewater pollution is synthesize adsorbents which their raw material obtains from polluted sources (Take synthesize refinery sludge-based activated carbon to remove hydrocarbon pollutants from refinery wastewater as an example).

Very attractive as well as the most relevant question to sole the problems of pollution.
One option you may also consider is substrate based subsurface flow constructed wetland. This has potentials for efficient removal of various pollutants.

You could also try waste biomaterials such as cocoa pod, fish scale, biochar, they can be explored as absorbents
