To determine the fringing field one can make a set of capacitors whose area is constant while the perimeter is variable. Then one measures the capacitance as a function of the length of the perimeter . By plotting C versus P, one can fit the curve by the relation
C= A C per unit area + P Cper unit perimeter ,
As we see the slope of the straight line will be Cper unit perimeter. This capacitance gives a measure for the stray field. It is the stray capacitance.
