Heated Nitrogen gas will be allowed to flow through stainless steel piping as part of my project.Hence, I need help to generate a formula in excel to calculate the length of piping required for the gas to maintain its high temperature. This formula will also be used if any adjustments to the setup is made.
L=0 since for any tubing length there will .be a heat transfer to environment which ever insulation is provided.
You should accept a temperature drop and determine as function of gas flow and outside temperature the required insulation. The heat transfer intensity depends on insulation layer and in and outside convection and of course of the overall temp. difference.
Nick's answer assumes you already have heated N2 and want to prevent it from cooling. Is that what you meant? Required length of pipe sounds more like you want to heat the gas, not prevent it from cooling. If you're worried about it cooling, then insulate the pipe and connections. If you want to heat it, then you can calculate that with an Excel spreadsheet. You can use either LMTD or NTU-effectiveness methods. You will need an estimated overall heat transfer coefficient, U, which would account for convection inside and outside plus the pipe material. Q=m*Cp*(T2-T1)=U*A*LMTD; A=UA/U=Q/LMTD/U; A=2*pi*d*L; L=A/2/pi/d.
Dudley J Benton thank you and yes the N2 gas is heated before flowing through the insulated pipe. my task was to calculate the length required so that the temperature drop would still be within acceptable range.
