I am preparing graphene oxide as per the protocol "http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/am100673g";
After addition of hydrogen peroxide i washed the settled graphene oxide 3 times with 1 M HCl. In the next step i am suppose to wash it with water and centrifuge till the suprenatant becomes neutral. Unfortunately, the moment i added water a thick brown gel was formed its very highly viscous and difficult to centrifuge.
Is this phenomena common while graphene oxide synthesis or something went wrong in my experiment ?
It is a strange phenomena found in your GO synthesis. I think, you did something wrong. Please repeat the experiment by following this paper.

I overcame the problem i had during the synthesis.
After the washing by HCl, the suspensions would expand in the washing process by water. Along the evolution of pH value from acid to neutral, the graphite oxide will exfloited into graphene oxide in the dispersions,ie, the volume of the suspension will expand and the viscosity will increase.
I increased the centrifugal speed and successesfully made GO

would u explain completely how do u wash and centrifuge your product? I have a lot of problem with this stage!
Think we are in the same boat.! I've done this like 100 times and I still got that graphene oxide in gel from. I don't think we have problem with that. The gel form helps the self-assembly thin film of graphene oxide(s), and they will be powdery if you get them in the precipitate form

Same case was with me, I also found graphene oxide in very viscous gel form but characterization showed there was no problem in GO and pure GO was prepared.
I'm preparing GO by Hummers method and I have the same problem. My way: centrifuge GO with H2O until you fell its swell, then using solvent is H2O + acetone (volume 1:1). Finally, using acetone to centrifuge.
Hi friends, the formation of the brown gel like substance is nothing but GO + water .. its a highly viscous liquid .. ultra centrifugation/ centrifugation 20,000 rpm of this solution shall solve the problem. This step is followed by dyring in oven.
You shold wash the GO with 1m M HCl. Then 1 g of solid can be disperse in 1 L of Nh4OH solution after sonciation for 49 minutes.
