Global energy markets are constantly on the move. Over the centuries, we have seen various energy sources dominating the world economy, which have led to the paradigm shifts in the industrial and societal development. The choice of energy resources and energy technologies that dominate in a country is very much dependent on the government policy and support. The future of energy is portrayed differently in national foresight studies and strategies and prominent research streams [1, 2, 3]. While some predict the wide deployment of renewables [4], others foresee the establishment of the hydrogen economy [5], and put stakes on nuclear fusion [6]. No matter what resources will dominate the energy balance, future energy systems will need to be more secure, sustainable and resilient. “Foresight and STI Governance” is pleased to announce this Special Issue ‘The Future of Energy” interested in research on prospective energy technologies, future energy markets assessments, analysis of the advanced energy systems. The submitted papers should held increase our understanding of the features and characteristics of the future energy industry.
