I have prepared MgO nanocomposite in powder form . I want to check its electrocatalytic properties but I have no expertise in making electrodes as it is also not my guide's field. Is there any other way from which I can check its electrocatalytic properties? Kindly help
If you are trying to test the electrocatalytic properties and dont have a lot of experience, I would suggest that you can try mixing the powder with a small amount of binder solutions and press onto a conductive substrate (ex. stainless steel) for the electrochemical testing.
Note that MgO, being ionically bonded, will have a very low electrical conductivity. However, you have mentioned MgO-nanocomposite. Therefore, I assume that it has enough conductivity for electrochemical experiments. Otherwise, you can mix the active material with carbon black for increased conductivity. Typically, you can prepare a slurry by mixing MgO nanocomposite with 2–5 wt% acetylene carbon black, 2 wt% poly-vinylidene fluoride (PVDF) binder dissolved in a few drops of N,N Dimethylformamide (DMF) and coat on to a graphite substrate using doctor-blade technique. You can dry this coating at about 250 C for 2 h and use as an electrode for your electrocatalytic experiments. Note that if you are using aqueous solutions for experiments, the surface of MgO will convert to Mg(OH)2.
