The optimum water depth in outdoor cultures is 1 to 1.2 m in ponds. The percentage of water exchange depends of the culture system. The percentage of daily exchange usually used in a commercial farms of México are: semi-intensive 5-10 %; intensive 5-20% and biofloc 0.1 – 5%.
In Vietnam, white shrimp ussually stock at over 80 psc/m2 in intensive shrimp farming and water depth is about 1.5 m2. Percentage of water exchange is about lesser than 10%
In Mexico they use larger ponds 5 to 10Ha each and shallower water. I have tried vannamei farming at various depths from 1m up to 4.5m. I would venture to say the deeper the better.
In Ecuador the depth of the ponds is around 1-1,5 meters for densities between 8 to 80.
The water exchange is lower than 10% in some farms with low densitties and around 20% in high densities, if you have good aereation systems and good water quality (bacterial use) can manage only 10% .
