My team has built a three-level three-phase PV inverter (grid-tied) of 20 kW rating and the point of common coupling is 50 Hz, 380 Vrms (line-to-line). For safe operation, we implemented too many safety interlocks (on grid voltage, frequency measurements, and on PLL healthy operation, on DC bus voltage for over and under voltage, on PV voltage, on inverter current for over current and short circuit, and others using the trip-zone signals of the power switches). The control is embedded on a TI-Delfino™ TMS320F28379D control card). There are two independent boost channels (10 kW each) to boost the DC voltage to 600 V (DC-bus rating) based on two independent MPPT controllers. The inverter is T-type three level one. The whole control algorithm is successfully tested on a Typhoon HIL402 platform along with the TMS320F28379D control card including all safety interlocks. The system is functioning in a very satisfactory manner. Indeed, every single hardware function is individually tested, i.e. the two booster channels are tested individually, and the inverter is tested individually by using it to drive an induction motor in V/F mode. (The intended switching frequency is 10 kHz)
However, when the whole system is integrated and placed into the enclosure, we got repetitive false trips from safety interlocks, when we dig deeper we found a severe HF noise interference, which resulted in 60~120 volt very narrow spikes superimposed on analog signals, when these spikes are sampled into the A/D it triggers the safety interlocks and the system is tripped.
We are not that good in EMC and noise cancellation issues, as a first guess remedy we decided to use grounded aluminum foils around all power conductors and around most of the low signal wires. However, this couldn't bring any improvement to the situation!
By the way, we are not using any ready-made EMC filters in our design, can this be the root cause of our noise issue or what, any help or tested advice is highly appreciated
I attach here some photos of the inverter cabinet, more details can be communicated with those who are interested in solving the issue. Indeed, a new fund is obtained for the project and we are going to resume. There will be a vacant paid seat for a qualified EMC expert who can handle this issue!
