Many pressures will be exerted on the tank during phase change of a material. To my knowledge, 1) the air given for volume expansion will exert some pressure, 2) sensible thermal expansion 3) phase change (I am not clear on this - I would appreciate it if someone could give some input). Do any other factors play a role, other than these? Does vapor pressure have some effect?
I think the list covers pretty much everything, even if 2) and 3) are strongly related and may be solved by simple dilatometric test. When you have a phase change, you can have a sudden expansion (or retraction) due to the variation of the crystalline parameters.
As a further suggestion... Please check the chemical compatibility between the melting material and the container material, because many liquid metals are strongly aggressive for... Steel for example, resulting in a decrease of mechanical properties and, possibly, the formation of holes.
