Cantilever wall is used to retain soils or water and this wall is treated as structural element..In the pile case, pile is treated as load carrying member and the load will be carried by the pile through frictional resistance mobilized along the pile length..however, sheet pile wall is used to support the earth, so this wall is to be designed against the maximum lateral pressure induced on the wall..the design of sheet pile wall is to be done by considering the wall movement should be within the limit and bending moment on the sheet pile within the moment capacity of the sheet pile wall..ok all the best..
Cantilever sheet pile walls primary aim is to restrain earth or water and it depend on its stability the active and passive resistance in front and behind the wall and also on the nature of the soil been retained. This are been designed for and for any of this walls that can not withstand the load the cantilever will be anchored will add additional strength to it. so it has nothing to do with friction. WHILE Pile on the other hand has the primary function of transferring load from the super structure to the hard rock under the ground that is the case of end bearing pile but for friction pile in the case that their is no hard strata below the ground it must be design against friction since the pile will only resist the strength by friction. I hope this helps
I agree with Karthigeyan . S and John Engbonye Sani. But it is also observed that for designing sheet pile walls vertical equilibrium is not considered. Also, after designing vertical equilibrium is not maintained which is the violation of equilibrium conditions as the structure must satisfy all the three equilibrium condition. Please help.@
