As there are many controversies between the researchers, and previous researchers in Online Impulse Buying Behaviour already used 7 point Likert scale. Shall I follow them? And what is the reason to select the 7 point scale?
True, it is a topic discussed several authors set in 5 options while others in 7, I mostly use the one of 5 although I think you should keep in mind that it is possible that 7 options are more preferable in an adult academic sample that seems to have the characteristics of mark appropriately.
I believe the options of having 5 or 7 responses in a Likert scale shouldn't be of concern. What is important here is will that scale give you an appropriate validity and reliability parameters to measure your main outcome. If the scale is validated and have good reliability scores, it is worthy to use them. On the other hand, it doesn't make a difference on the scoring of the scale. Such Likert scales are usually used as continuous dependent variables (meaning you will tabulate the score of each item to obtain the total scores and later find associations through inferential statistical methods). In anyhow, it is not going to reduce the power of your analysis unless you may intend to make your continuous dependent variable into categorization. In short, choosing a scale depends on how valid and reliable for your study population, will that scale measure what you exactly intend to measure and impact your research.
Thank you very much Dr. Jimmy Y. Zhong for helping me in this issue. I have also used seven point likert scale in my paper but I just wanted the ecplanations for using it. Now it's clear to me.
