Thanks Mr. Rohit for sharing your views...but the million dollar question is " do we have facility to feed thousands of people particularly in India context..by using so called ecologically naive food production techniques?

In short: I would say that both food safety and food security are very important in the Indian and the global context. In order to meet, not only UN SDG #2 (zero hunger), but also #3 (Good health and well-being) and #12 (responsible consumption and production). As mentioned in the paper that you have attached, the long-term aims of both safety and security must be aligned.

But , this topic is soo complex that a short answer doesn't not do justice. I can try to justify it with a few examples based on my understandings (which in no-way is exhaustive)

The inter-twined nature of food safety and security can be seen in matters like the disease burden and food wastage issue:

In terms of food wastage, several reports estimate that 40% of the food produced in India is wasted at a post-harvest stage. Some of the measures that can be put in-place to solve this can be proper cold chain management, blockchain technology, shorter supply chains, better handling practices, etc. These measures will also directly result in food becoming safer, hence benefiting food safety. But, such measures has to be supported by the correct food safety policies. For eg: a transition from a hazard based approach, where the food product is rejected and wasted if a hazard is present towards risk based strategies, where the food product is deemed safe for consumption if the hazard is within a threshold which is determined by risk based estimates.

Food security, is not only about increasing food production but it is to ensure accessibility of nutritious and safe food to the population. Globally the burden of foodborne diseases (FBD) is estimated to be 400 million – almost 1 in 10 people in the world suffering from an FBD every year (WHO FERG, 2015). In India, this burden has been estimated at 100million cases per year, with the economic burden of this being tremendously high (ILSI report, 2018). How can we think of feeding more people but not making the food safe at the same time (wrt to the stringent regulations/norms) ? The topics of agricultural intensification and circular food systems further highlights food safety issues like pathogen intensification. All of this highlights how food safety and food security are intimately connected when it comes to sustainable food systems, globally and in India.

I agree with Dipon Sarkar's comment. The question sounds as if it were black or white (food safety or food security), but in fact they are intertwined and when aiming at contributing towards one, we should always consider the other one.

In fact, the UN definition of food security includes the food safety component: that all people, at all times, have physical, social, and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food that meets their food preferences and dietary needs for an active and healthy life.

The question of food security/food safety is obviously in relation to water security since the water demand of agriculture is by far the most important. The recent 550-page UN report (the must-to-be read) entitled "Creating a Sustainable Food Future" warns that world hunger figures are on the rise again. It is available on:

The report, produced in partnership with CIRAD, the World Bank, UNEP, UNDP and INRA, offers solutions to feed the planet in 2050 without destroying it. The report estimates that to meet the challenge of feeding 10 billion people in 2050, without destroying the planet, it would be necessary to be able to: produce 56% more food, compared to 2010, avoiding the use of 600 million hectares of additional agricultural land, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 11 gigatonnes to comply with the Paris Agreement.
