Dear Researchers,

I am modeling the mechanism of the slope failure under the effect of the groundwater level in UDEC.

In case 1, the groundwater level is just below the discontinuity point a (right side figure), stresses do not reach the Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria.

In case 2, the groundwater level increases to point a.

To represent the presence of the water in joint, I reduced the friction angle (phi) of joint. Then, the stresses at point 1 and 2 reach the failure criteria. However, the normal stress at point 2 in case 2 increased while it was decreased at point 1.

I am wondering if you could tell me the reason behind the increase of the normal stress at point 2.

Any comment would be appreciate.

Thank you in advances.
