Using the simple compression test to determine Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio and the Coulomb friction coefficient

Abstract

Analytical solutions are derived for the compression of cylinders with bonded surfaces and with Coulomb friction conditions at the interfaces. The bonded solution assumes that the radial displacement is linearly dependent on radius which leads to simple forms. These are compared with FE data and the apparent modulus is found to be within about 8% for the whole range of aspect ratios (10−2–103), and thus degrees of constraint for the cylinders. The apparent moduli are shown to be strong functions of both ν and μand the solutions thus provide schemes for finding both parameters experimentally using inverse methods. This is demonstrated by using the FE results as such data to explore how many tests, and what aspect ratios, are needed. Some preliminary experimental results are also given.

i think the compression test and flexural  test both ill destroy the specimens what about the vibration or acoustics......

indeed both are destructive, whlie the acoustic are non destructive. other advantaje is that this method have less restrictions about the sample geometry.

It is a good alternative when it comes to fragile materials

you can measure modulus using tension, compression or flexure without destroying the specimen, just load it enough to get some force into it, and measure load and strain.  Direct tension or compression are usually better as flexure has a varying strain field.  But flexure might be useful for some applications.

A useful guide for flexural/bending test is to ensure that the span-to-depth ratio of the sample is sufficient to reduce the effect of shear. i.e. for timber beams, a span-to-depth ratio of 18:1 is typically used.

I am not familiar with metal ceramics, but the ASTM C1684 - 13 gives a standard for evaluating the flexural properties of advanced ceramics.

first of all I Thank you all for your input. compression/tension or flexural strength with out destruction..... but it will have some plastic deformations so further samples can not be used as it will be worked on....but its a good option to know. Adeayo Sotayo  sir can you refer me to any material on metal matrix composites reinforced by ceramic nano particles and their mechanical testing

the young modulus can be measured by compression and flexion tration tests while remaining within the elastic range. a second method is the measurement by grindo sonic even at high temperature

You have to use a ratio sample length (span) to its thickness more than 20 in linear area loadings. Also you can increase accuracy if you carry out tests on various lengths(span). It is better to use a flat sample as when using cylindrical it is difficult to consider deformation of sample under a punch and support.
