I totally agree with your comment. A lot of people (mostly non-medical but even some medical) think that a "specialist" is better than a "general practitioner" but do not realise that this IS a specialty in itself. If anything, I would think it would be harder to have some understanding of so many areas: adult medicine, surgery , psychiatry, paediatrics, geriatrics, obstetrics and everything...!
Family medicine and general practice are the same or two different specialties? How can layman identify them separately, family physician, general practitioner, and general family practitioner/physician?
