I found a umat code for abaqus analysis which is written in the fortran. There is an expression while starting the code "!DEC$ FREEFORM". As far as I understand, this expression forces the fortran to run in any format. Since when I remove this expression my abaqus file gives compiling error.
Does anybody assure me wbout it?

That directive tells the compiler that the file is written in free-form. If you remove that expression the compiler will treat the file according to its extension.
".f,.for,.f77.F,.FOR,.F77" : Fixed-form
".f90,.F90,..." : Free-form
The original author most likely presumed that the DEC (now defunct Digital Equipment Corporation) FORTRAN compiler would be used. The code is probably F90, not F77. I have a copy of Digital FORTRAN 6.1 that I've used for years and works great. The GNU FORTRAN compiler may work, though I've never used it. If this is a stand-alone program, you can probably get it compiled and running. If you're trying to use some FORTRAN code inside some other software like a UDF, it would probably be less effort to start all over again from scratch. Using FORTRAN for anything other than FORTRAN would be like tweeting with the ancient cuneiform alphabet. I have two FORTRAN to C translators that work fairly well, but they won't handle free format F90, only F77 and before. I've translated hundreds of thousands of lines of FORTRAN into C over the years and written a million lines of FORTRAN. C is vastly superior in every possible way.
