Hi All,

I got a hold of Anila and wanted to share with the group my work and research.

I used to sell and install floating islands but moved on to the self organizing wetland bioreactor bc the floating wetlands are expensive and the micro plastics break down and are consumed by local wildlife (geese, ducks, fish).

Our buried or free standing bioreactors use the same principles as a floating wetland (biofilm, matrix, water cleaning, point source). A boxed wetland, designed to be easily cleaned and accessed, is 100 times more effective footprint to footprint than floating or constructed wetlands, and capable of a huge array of microbial niches, oxidative and reductive.

I mostly use them to harvest metal oxides from solution on acid mine drainage sites, including low pH iron oxidation (2.8-3.5 pH) and biogenic manganese oxidation at pH 6.5 to 7. We are also using them for water, nutrient, and carbon recycling in cannabis, as aerobic septic tanks or methane producers....

Morning Dr, (see attached file for the abstract on the unpublished study, this was what lead me to wetland bioreactors instead of floating treatment wetlands)

Problem with measuring success rates with a floating island of any kind is that, since it is a non-point source embodiment floating in-situ, it is near impossible to determine removal or uptake rates directly.

You can't take a water samples at the same time which easily or clearly show nutrient uptake of the floating island. I did a study in 2011 using small chunks of floating islands in 110 gallon (440 liters app) livestock watering tanks and dosed with compost tea. 4 troughs were empty/controls and 4 had 18"x18"x8" floating islands planted with cat-tails and (? another wetland plant). No flow or recirculation was provided, the system was static.

I was able to show a small, but not statistically significant uptake in PO4. To have a measurable result, I needed a vessel to contain the plastic growth matrix of a BioHaven floating treatment wetland sold by Floating Island International.

If you check the article, i was probably right in that the P concentrations were too low, but 8 years of experience also tells me that flow rates yielding more O2 would have also helped a lot to encourage aerobic respiration and P uptake in the biofilm and to not mess with the plants.

I've got lots more info, but have to get to a site visit. Please ask away and I'd be happy to walk you through our first 10 or so generations and adaptations to the wetland in a box this study lead us to.
