According to my knowledge MAC layer plays a very important role for your sensor network or distributed sensor network. As packet size, frame duration depends on MAC Layer so finding out network performance with respect to variable packet size with different duration will be a good initiation of your work. then you can move to packet loss, duplicate packet, clustering, Another one important how you allocate the bandwidth. All these leads to a very important parameter that is battery consumption.
