I'm writing my dissertation on the sociology of sexism in films, and I was wondering how I go about the ethics form?
I will analyse language and character developments, but it is obviously not like interviews where I have direct contact, so I was hoping someone could advice me on how to write about consent and such?
If you are dealing with fictional characters you shouldn't need consent anymore than you would analysing language and character developments in a novel. You may however need permission from the copyright holder if you are quoting large amounts of the film's transcript.
Your topic is interested and innovative.. to analyse ethics in the film you should analyse the the character building in the film and throughout the film look that what are the useful messages are given by writer.. these ideals and useful & meaningful messages are ethics are called ethics analysis
Mie Astrup Jensen Looking at Professor Bhalerao's answer, which to me seems off the mark, let me ask you to clarify your question. You speak of "the ethics form" so I was assuming that you were asking about filling out a document typically required by a university's ethics board before research is allowed to proceed. Was that the point of your question?
Karl Pfeifer yes, exactly what you mentioned. For my thesis we fill in that standard ethics form about harms, data protection, etc etc., and I just wanted to double check in terms of what to say when I'm analysing characters and not the actresses, but also in terms of the filmography.
I followed your guidelines and wrote that I will provide a full filmography to give appropriate credit to producers/directors/writers/actors, that pictures will not be a part of my final product, and that extensive quotes will not be used since I do qualitative semiotic content analysis. And I found some UK copyright documents in terms of using media for research to further support your answer for my proposal.
I'm researching the reproduction of cultural violence against women, and using some shows as my data to see how they address contemporary issues and if they further contribute to the reproduction of sexism and racism since these TV programmes are very influential globally.
It would be best to draw from your methods and methodology section of the proposal in order to justify the "ethics of your approach".
