Compulsory education at all stage may work. In my opinion, there is need to change mind set and develop the tenancy to work towards this direction may bring positive results...

yes you are true absolutely .But the problem lies in the actual process of awarness generation.It's really too tuff to change the mindset of people through awrness campiagning only.Temporarily obiously it effects but for the lifetime influence this education must be very sophisticated,people oriented which is lacking in our system.

the text books developed in several universities in compulsory environment education are too theoretical and do not cater to the needs of the "non-science" students... needs thorough revision...

yes you r true.But who will take the lead to change the whole process?Why the policy makers,stalk holders ,governemnt educational authorities are keeping mum.Its not posible for the general public to revise the whole curriculum .We just can raise our voice but they are the actual authorities to make all revisions.Do you think we environmnetalists should write to the government regarding the issue for immediate revision?

I really sometimes feel very sad that we Indian people never give the attention to those issues which are more addressible but running after meaningless issues all th etime.But in western countries these curriculum is full fledged practical program where leraners also enjoy and gets the real test of the environment.But here everything is happening theoritically and nothing else..really get depressed for these happenings..thanks for your link.will definately go through it...

What do you mean by "all stages of education" ? Plz clarify.

All stategs i metioned meant in primary school level ,middle school ,high school and undergraduate level education .These are the stages i talked about.Any confusion?

Actually what I would like to say that neither it is formal education (in general) nor the environmental education (in particular) does not protect much our environment or the planet earth from pollution /environmental degradation and the other destruction too. It is the attitude what helps to care environment, and not the mere “education” or more specifically “environmental education”. The formal education has been destroying our environment in many ways; there are plenty of examples which prove this. The formal education is the mother of “consumerism” and this increasing consumerism leads to decrease the habitability of our mother earth. There are many primitive tribes inhabiting in remote hilly and forested tracks of India as well as in the other part of the world, they are far away from the light of civilization and the so-called education, but they living symbiotically with nature, they do not alter natural habitats as a educated person does, they protects the biodiversity of the region, they use the available resources sustainably. So it does not necessarily the environmental education protects our planet from destruction, but the attitude, love and care towards the environment ………..so environmental education does not help……………..

You are true to some extent.But without knowlegde of a specific subject how would you be able to create any attitude towards it?If you dont get the proper education how will acquire knowledge and how will you develop attitude .There is a deep relationship between educational pattern,knowledge development and growing attitude.You can go through it.But the system of formal education is the main kulprit which never help in developing attitude which creates knowledge base only.For this we need practical activities and moral education which must be implemented in the same curriculum of Compulsory environmntal education subject.Then only a positive result wil come which is happening in other countries.

But Mr Behera don't you feel that your education in Geography helped you realise more details and your passion towards environment gained more importance as you were able to see the change. What our Queen wishes to say is the same... she wants environment education to be thought not to get marks or degrees but taught with passion so that the attitude towards environment changes....

I believe in the word MANAGEMENT for environment... when you read the word without the last letter "T" it reads MANAGE-MEN meaning manage human beings... and without the last letter "N" it reads MANAGE ME... if each one of us manage ourselves we can manage others and thats management... Lets therefore try to tell ourselves and others MANAGEME if you wish to manage others (MANAGEMEN) and thats MANAGEMENT... we dont need an MBA in environment (on the lighter side... no offence please) for this :-)

I am concern regarding the role of formal education in consumer’s behaviour and more particularly its role towards the growing global consumerism. Or in other words, we simply cannot ignore the impacts of formal education on “consumerism”. Anyway, formal education gives a boost to human needs and per capita consumption of natural resources. All the developed countries (DCs) are the living example of that. The per capita generation of Carbon dioxide is much more in DC than any under developed countries (UDCs).Level formal and technical education in UDCs’s is always very low as compare to DCs. On the other hand the “urban world” is more literate and environmentally aware but also environmentally polluted and degraded as compare to “the rural world”. The “urban world” is full of consumerism and commercialism, which is one of the direct outcomes of education.............Therefore, education (including environmental) enhance the environmental pollutions, degradation and does not help to protect environments anyway through its influence on consumerism and commercialism.

Yes, This is a very important issue you raised here. One of my research student is presently working on the syllabi of environmental science program being offered in public sector universities of Pakistan. I am of the opinion that same research studies are needed to be conducted at various level of education, like Primary Level, Secondary School and college level. We direly need to adopt curricula that would create awareness, education and skills iin all level of educational institution.

Definitely environmental studies is required in all stages of education, but in my point of view it should be applied.

As someone who has both taught courses of my original design at local universities and professional centers of learning (like the AIChE, and the CFPA) and authored a series of books about the subject - one of which I use in my ISO 14001 implementation course - I can confidently state that what is being taught under the subject of "sustainability" is somewhat off the mark.

Implementing Environmental Studies in all stages of education is alone not enough. It should be properly taught in such a way that the learners are made aware of the environmental problems,develop good attitude towards the environment, follow environmental friendly practices to safe guard our environment in which we are born and live.

As of course environmental studies is necessary in all stages of education but not only the defining the environmental resources but focus on utilizing environment which go sustainable..

Within the second group, a crucial position is occupied by environmental engineering. Environmental engineering can be defined as a discipline in the field of technical science, utilizing engineering methods: • For preserving, rational shaping and using external natural environment (e.g. water resources, waste management, air protection, soil protection), • For preserving and shaping internal environment of rooms and constructions (devices and installations). Environmental engineering realizes a wide variety of pro-ecologic activities within the described fields: • Shapes appropriate conditions and technological methods to uphold proper parameters regarding the human environment, • Shapes appropriate technical conditions and technological methods to secure the environment's natural biological balance, • Limits adverse effects of mankind's economic activity, • Provides technology allowing to reduce the usage of nonrenewable resources (e.g. cleaner production, recycling raw materials from waste), • Mitigates the effects of natural disasters (floods, droughts, pollution in water, air and soil). This definition shows how important environmental engineering is for realization of the sustainable development concept. It shapes the conditions of human life; it touches upon the issue of resources, which in turn determines meeting human material needs, both for the present generation and in the future. Among other detailed problems, energy issues must be pointed out: energy supply, preserving energy carriers and, especially, the usage of fossil fuels.
