Hi. I've read about the commercial software (EMTP) used for power cables steady-state and transient simulations. The software implements some transmission line models (constant parameter model and wide band model). I would like to have some feed backs concerning the performance of this simulation tool. For exemple is it able to simulate faults and degradations into power cable ?

Thank you for your answer. The faults described in your attached paper cover the short circuit faults and insulation damage which cause unusual overvoltages. In my question i should have used "defect" which refers to damages into cable structure which could be either harmful or not (exemple: screen cutting)

EMTP is a very useful project for simulating Electro-magnetic transient. I often use ATP/EMTP. It is a free software. Concering how to use this software, you can refer to it's examples and help files.

EMTP is a powerful tool for different kind of electromagnetic and transient simulations and studies. However, in your case u may need to define your own model based on the existing components. I mean you need to model different parts of the cable together and then study that. There are some examples in EMTP that can give u ideas.

You only need a model that corresponds to real conditions. This means you have to know whether it is a steady-state or transient phenomenon. Similarly, it is necessary to model the fault in the cable, for example. partial discharge, change in a wave impedance, and the like. Some models use lumped elements, some distributed elements.
