I am making an Electric field intensity map, just as a heat map. Showing on diffferretnt locations on the dek of a ship the measured field intensity. The field probe has a gps sensor atatched to it.
now I want to make a heat map with in x,y possition alttitude and longititude. What should I use for x and y?
If I understand your question correctly, X is degree (lat) from GPS, Y is degree (lon) as well. Use Google Earth for consolidating data.

I came late to your question.
The GPS gives you degrees and you want to translate them in distances where you take the axis perpendicular to the latitude line as the x axes and you represent on it the x- ordinates, and so the other normal axes is the y axis and it represents the latitude scale. It is okay and logical. You can even calibrate the degrees to meters if you it is required either by self calibration or by getting the scales from the web. what do you proposed is okay.
