I am looking for any contribute in the area of eating patterns/disorders in migrants. Particularly, I would like to know how therapists deal with these problems. Stress a bit more on diagnosis and epidemiology. Thanks
I read somewhere that some people (espacially young) simply adjust their eating habits to those in a new country because it is also a way to deal with identity problems, the need to belong and be the same as others. But I guess it also depends on the whole family.
My UNC colleague, Dr. Mae Lynn Reyes-Rodriguez, is studying this eating disorders in Latinos in North Carolina. Check out some of her recent publications: PMID:21308586 and PMID:20455253.
There is quite a lot of literature now on migrants and it seems that the risk of eatind disorders is higher, especially in first generation offspring, where migrants move from a less "Westernised" to more "Westernised" society (e.g. studies by Mumford and others). I work in a area with high migrant numbers and see eating disorders in all groups, including not infrequently young Muslim women. The management does help if it is culturally informed e.g. knowing it is quite possible to be excused fasting during Ramadan on health grounds. Fortunately we are now graduating many medical students and psychiatrists from diverse backgrounds which I anticipate will help overcome biases in diagnosis and assessment.
Hi, i know that prof. Silvia Cimino has published a papaer on migrant children's feeding disorders. But i'm quite sure the paper is in italian language. Maybe you can google it.
