How to optimally use the intellectual potential of students (experts, scientists) - in terms of the distribution of "knowledge spectrum"? Please see attachement.
Basic knowledge is the most important component. The other knowledge classes have to be build on basic knowledge - otherwise they are not adequately underpinned.
With basic knowledge you are able to develop (aka 'invent') special knowledge. It does not work the other way round.
I'd answer your question "how to optimally use ..." with: "fuel their passion".
Or show them, what their existing passion(s) have to do with the area in which you want them to use their intellect. This is how human intellect works: repeatedly engaging oneself in a topic improves your insight as well as your capabilities.
