The current trend is to publish research work in e-journals, which may not have hard paper versions in conventional libraries of the world. How safe is this virtual archiving for future generations?
History has shown us that libraries may burn down or be destroyed in civil unrest. E-Journals have the advantage that copies are distributed all over the world, providing sufficient backup.
An e-journal I work for, eXPRRESS Polmyer Letters prints about 20 volumes of the aricles published in the year and we send the hard copies to some major libraries. This combinaes easy availability with safety.
