The gender inequality, women inferior status, domestic violence, and negative attitudes against women, all are the results of the socio-cultural norms. Sociocultural norms are dominated by negative stereotypes of women that work to perpetuate women's inferior status in the social hierarchy in many worldwide societies. Women status is not determined or governed by the contribution they make to their family or society, but by culturally accepted norms and strongly held beliefs, which have several myths attached with them. But women themselves play significant role as custodians of such norms, because they believe that these sociocultural norms are true. Moreover, women contribute to passing them on accurately from one generation to the next, thus they have remained constant over the years. Therefore, the gender gap will remain until sociocultural norms change.

Sociocultural norms in the USA stress that women should be nice. Too many women in the workplace interpret this to mean that they should not negotiate for higher salaries and other benefits at work because to do so seems aggressive and "masculine." Their unwillingness to negotiate for higher salaries contributes to the gap in income between men and women in the labor force.
