I have to make a retraction, I didn't realize there were so many species of batfish. this appears to be a polka dot batfish, indigenous to the Gulf of Mexico (where I found it in the St. Andrews Bay pass).
Hi, Fish and Moubray tested Ogcocephalus radiatus and Ogcocephalus vespertilio for sound production without success (see my summary at: http://www.fishecology.org/soniferous/soundposter.htm
However, they had very limited sampling so their results is not conclusive.
thanks! I put some video with audio up on my drive site if you want to hear it - I talked with some NOAA guys that work in the gulf, apparently they are a known quantity and regularly vocalize in protest to being caught.
