I have Micro CT data and I am using Avizo software on it. While using Avizo I can change the intensity values to see particular substances. Are the intensity values and Attenuation values, that many medical papers talk about, the same? I do know that attenuation means reduction in the strength of a signal, but I want to be pretty sure if they both mean the same thing when it comes to micro CT
Not necessarily.
The attenuation values may very likely be scaled before saving. What is the source of your data? Check with the OEM supplied image reconstruction tool and/or the data saving tool to get the right answer.
What is the data type that you are feeding into Avizo - byte/short/int/float data?

The values are scaled. You will need to calibrate your intensity values to attenuation values. Once this is done you can then calibrate your images. Typical CT images are actually inverted from the observed radiograph. High attenuation structures will appear as high intensity features in the CT image.
