It goes without saying that the answer is influenced by the definitions we set for language and intelligence.
Generally speaking, it can be said that language is a tool, and then learning several languages gives you many tools, and these tools make you more able to decipher more nuts (does this mean increased intelligence?).
Instead of defining intelligence as a single, general ability, Gardner (1983) posited 8 types: (a) linguistic, (b) logical-mathematical, (c) musical, (d) spatial, (e) bodily/kinesthetic, (f) interpersonal, (g) intrapersonal, and (h) naturalistic. Linguistic intelligence has to do with words, spoken or written: it may mean that people who are endowed with it learn foreign languages more easily on account of high verbal memory and recall as well as an ability to understand and manipulate syntax. That said, it would run counter to Gardner (1983) to claim that linguistic intelligence per se explains greater overall intelligence, whatever that might be. Besides, not all polyglots can speak or write their several languages equally well.
