Some fractures are associated with nodules in different geological settings. My question is: How does the growth of these nodules can affect the propagation of natural fractures? what is the mechanism?
Hi Israa. I'm not an expert but I think that there are two possible end members in my opinion:
1. nodules act passively as disturbing elements in the system and fracture are impacted by the different mechanical behaviour of nodules. e.g. fracture deviate around nodules or change their intensity/width...etc.
2 nodules act actively as displacive elements and induce some kind of excess pressure in the system and/or some heave forces and thus induce fracturing around them. In this latter case I suggest you to see how the growth of ice lenses in permafrost soils and hydrate nodules work.. (the mechanism is called frost-heave)
The field approached by you is very interesting and also vast, so more research can be done in this regard. It's very interesting topic. The following article link may help you for your kind information.
