Does the applied synthesis lead to the formation of cyclic and linear oligomers? If it does, I would like to see which ones are formed. It would support the reaction that only a single compound is made.
The reaction of dichlorodimethylsilane with 1,4-butanediol usually gives a low M.Wt. polymer "or oligomer" with the CRU " constitutional repeating unit" : -Si(Me)2-O(CH2)4- . The use of excess diol is to ensure having (OH) groups at the terminals. Heating is applied to drive the side product (HCl) off & to get the highest possible chain lengths (i.e. highest average molecular weight) but a polysiloxane will always have limitation on M.Wt. & so the product is oligomeric.
This reaction is a condensation polymerization reaction; depending on the mole ratio of the reactants the formation of products can be facilitated.
Yes excess moles of the alcohol will favour linear polymer formation, but cannot be eliminated.
