Really an interesting question and relevant. Normally, the attachment pattern is important for raising a child and establishing contact between parents and a child. Try Siegel's book on "The Developing Mind" 2nd edition--written for a lay audience but provides and interesting overview with references. The book attempts to sythesize research on attachment with a number of other areas.
