We perform research and manufacture devices with around 1uL droplets of aqueous solution. It would be great to be able to add a fluorescent probe or marker for absorbance which produces a strong signal, while being generally biologically inert, and environmentally safe. A suggestion or two would be helpful to get started. I have several fluorophores but have some caution to use them in any sort of industrial process due to contaminating our waste.
There are commercial fluorescent tracer dyes that are supposed to be non-toxic, such as this one on Amazon:
