14 April 2025 5 5K Report

Hello all, I would appreciate if you had any input for my question below that is a bit misleading for me.

I have an independent variable with 5 categories, and only one category shows a statistically significant p-value (compared to the reference), can I conclude that the independent variable is a significant predictor of the outcome?

I think the significance of a single category doesn’t imply that the whole variable is a significant predictor? Should I look at overall F-test (or Type III p-value) for the variable to determine if it's a significant predictor?

I ask because I see that many published papers only report the individual p-values for each level of categorical variable in linear regression and not the overall p-value

In my case, one category among 5 category is significant and Overall F-value for this variable indicates non significancy. Should I report both the individual p-values for each category (to show which levels differ significantly from the reference) and the overall p-value for the independent variable (to say is that a significant predictor or no)?

Thank you so much in advance,

Bahar
