I synthesized magnetic nanoparticles using sol gel method and then deposited on a substrate. i just want know if i expose the thin film to magnetic film, will the RI changes? from what i know, if it is magnetic fluid, the RI will change but i'm not sure about thin film.
It depends on the magnetic properties of your nanoparticle films.
Generally, the refractive index depends on electric and magnetic susceptibilities. The magnetic susceptibility is governed by the magnetic behaviour of your film, and it would be responded to the external magnetic field. Therefore, depending on the magnetic behaviour of the film, the refractive index would change it is applied to an external magnetic field.
