My graduate capstone is reviewing research on MORAL DISTRESS SYMPTOMS as they apply to (contribute to the emotional state of) police and the contribution it makes to police violence (use of force beyond a threshold).
For example, moral distress from working with child sex abuse material could lead to perceiving everyone as an abuser and influence decision-making.
Police violence is more likely in an officer with compromised decision-making skills (ethically or due to hypervigilance.)
Any research on racism and how it influences this topic is appreciated.
After the death of African-American George Floyd during a police operation in the US in the spring, and in Europe (Germany, for example), the question arose: does the police have a problem with structural racism? A group of criminologists from the University of Bochum published the results of a study on illegal and racist police violence. The study, which asked more than 3,300 people about their experiences, concludes that police do discriminate against people based on skin color and migrant background in Germany. In addition to the existence of a structural problem in police practice, this does not mean that it applies to the police as a whole or that it acts intentionally in this way. There are subconscious stereotypes or mechanisms of action at play that can lead to discrimination. Talking about the problem without excessive emotion is critical.
Racism is an understanding of the moral hierarchy of people of different ethnic backgrounds. Where ethnicity is determined biologically or quasi-biologically, moral racism is purest. Other types of racism start from the moral superiority of culture, civilization, way of life, religious affiliation, language even, or some other property that defines the collective identity or the identity of individuals as members of a nation. Moreover, ethnic identity is understood as a collective moral property and is subject to establishing a moral hierarchy (Balkans, for example).
Moral distress? Perhaps. But, basically, and historically, it's a perception bias and prejudice. Even some African Americans themselves may even look down upon other kindred African Americans or naturized African Americans. Blacks or African Americans despite their skin color belongs to different ethnic groups or tribes. Similarly, Asian Mongoloids (Far Eastern Asians like Chinese, Koreans, Japanese, Mongolians, Vietnamese, etc.) all look alike but we may all have discriminations amongst each other because of genocides, and the treatment of humanity. The question about racial disparity in America is much deeper. The question is did America really get out slavery despite winning the Civil War in 1865 (date can be incorrect, apologies)? I don't think so. When I was studying in the US and living in the dormitories, I found that most White Americans (irrespective of their intelligence) are just poignantly racist. But what I learned was that if you take racism with a pinch of salt and moved on, they will eventually moved on and forgotten about your skin color and treated you as their own. However, one must proved to be belonging and not argued or challenged at thrifty issues. That, they would defend to the hilt and ensure your opinions were a minority.
I am of the opinion that Police racism is a contributory factor to the way minorities are policed in several countries of the world. If you are a black person driving a very expensive car in the UK where I grew up, you are more likely to suspected as a criminal. You are more likely to be stopped by the police for the colour of your skin for Driving whilst been black.
Racism flourishes in any society where their minorities and disempowered few , the police maintain the status quo for example keeping immigrants out. In some instances abuses their powers when it comes to policing powerless and defenceless people. Those who are marginalised from the main stream of society.
Police brutality is seen in this context, the despicable manner Mr George Floyd and many others were killed by the police clearly shows that racism conscious and sub consciously plays out when it come to practical policing. The image of the black suspect is centered around violence and a member of the dangerous classes that must always be approached with caution.
Institutional racism is synonymous with the British police. The racism in the police is sustain by the dominant police culture informed by cult of masculinity or machismo. In some instances , even black detainees are begging that they can breathe , police due to racism find it hard to believe when a big stereotypical black guy is crying for help. The slavery historical tragedy that a black person is conditionally more physical stronger to be used as disposable beast of burden lingers on and hold sway to date in the psyche of white police officers.

The psychological construction of the "black other" makes police officers treat black people more harshly than the norm. How many black police officers have killed white people ruthlessly in the US? Are the numbers comparable to what we hear been reported in the media on a regular basis. Perhaps , a starting point for the police should be that all men are born equal and they should be treated with respect and dignity as human beings at all times. The law should hold those officers who hide behind the uniform to perpetuate unlawful violence on the citizenry.
