In Poland, in social sciences and humanities, situation is very simple: in some political circumstances, i.e. under rule of new party/parties with clear, strictly defined agenda, some topics are no-go area, others are welcome. Hi Hisham, of course political change affects scientific research!
Ii is very naïve to think otherwise!
It has been shown over and over again through history. Look up Copernicus, Bruno, Lysenko, purging of Jewish scientists from Nazi Germany, Mengele, etc.
Whenever a populist dictator gains power by the will of ignorant populations, then first thing they do is to get rid of the educated classes. That includes Scientists!
But fanatic fundamentalist believers are the worst. They will stop at nothing to destroy past knowledge and stifle any further discoveries.
Guess who they will target first? The educated classes, museums, libraries and scientists!
