I was challenged by a businessman in Cork Ireland that PhD Completion did not really matter - not to our universities enough they would change the way they set up the degree, nor to the professors or even the student themselves.
So I ask our community - do we think completion matters? If so who are the heavy hitters in pushing back on the mean of 50% completion in 5 years?

In Latvia (EU) it matters if you think to participate in international scientific projects. It matters if you plan to develop your own university courses. It matters if you want to become an expert on national or international levels.
In some Latvian universities it is Dr.Sc.ing in others it's PhD. Of course it always possible to achieve a PhD Habilitus level :)
