I have been wondering if there is a parallel between the mental development of modern humans from child to adulthood with the phylogenetic evolution of the brain of hominids along time.

This thought originated from the the paralleled established by Heckel in his claim that ontogeny repeats phylogeny. Could it be that  present  mental development reflects the phylogeny of primitive thinking? In simple words, do the different stages of  mental development  resemble the mental stages of hominids in different evolutionary stages?

It is said that modern chimps have the mental development (in terms of rationality) of a 6 year old child. Could it be that Neanderthals (or other prior species) had the mental development of a modern  6 year old child?
