It's a known fact that social media platforms are skewed to spur negative content faster than positive ones. This is also partly due to the fact that humans are naturally more inclined to view negative content be it: lewd, false information, "epic fails" etc.

Does limiting one's exposure to social media platforms really help abate this? Or do the social media platforms need to take responsibility to remove addictive features and possibly lose potential users.

Addictive features here could be gamification of some sorts, constant push notifications, and algorithms which "know" individuals to provide content they "prefer" just to name a few.
