-They won’t get cited, but will get read. However…
-Make sure your editorial is well-known (& also sells pdf versions /allow preprints in your web)
-For early career researchers one/two book chapters can give you credit, but remember that you will be evaluated mainly on papers, so keep the ratio of books/papers low.
So;
if you want to be cited do not write a book chapter. If what you have to say fits into a review or a research article, don’t write a book chapter.
But if you have something to say for which papers are not the perfect fit, then write a book chapter! It also will look nice in your CV.

I think it also depends upon the requirements of your employer .... some may prefer one publication medium over another whereas some others may have no preference ...
The difference between publishing a text as an article in a journal or as a chapter in a monograph can result from differences in editorial requirements. The requirements regarding editorial standards specified for scientific journals and also for monographs may be different. Differences in this respect may be more important than other issues.
I believe, the journal articles are better as it goes through rigorous review process compared to book chapters. Again the standards and requirements varies based on several factors. Sometimes, book chapters are given good points in API calculations. In my opinion, if your research is novel enough it is better to put it in a peer-reviewed journal. However,regarding citation, in the age of Researchgate, I don't agree with the comments made before. If the work is good enough, it can obtain citation.
