Literature shows that Innovation has different types of antecedents:

- Organizational antecedents which could be internal and external: internal like professional background of managers, skills of workforce, efforts to improve technology and external like intensity of networking, proximity advantages related to

networking, receipt of institutional support . These antecedents are generally called innovation capabilities (Romijn and Albaladejo, 2002, "Determinants of innovation capability in small electronics and software firms in southeast England." Research

Policy").

- Individual characteristics like opportunity exploration,generativity, formative investigation, championing and application have positive impact on innovation (Kleysen and Street, 2001, "Toward a multi-dimensional measure of individual innovative behavior." Journal of Intellectual Capital).

Other studies showed that antecedents like personal mastery, transformational leadership, proactiveness, shared vision, have positive impact on organizational innovation.(V.J. Garcı´a-Morales et al. "Antecedents and consequences of organizational innovation and organizational learning in entrepreneurship", Industrial Management & Data Systems, Vol. 106 No. 1, 2006).

In my opinion, innovation antecedents could be classified in four categories: individual, organizational, strategic, and environmental.

If you are looking for an alternative to the Schumpeterian model of innovation I would strongly suggest looking at Nobel laureate Edmund Phelps" book "Mass Flourishing."  Rather than understanding innovation as scientific and technical discovery in pursuit of monopoly profits, Phleps argues convincingly that challenge and the creative spark has a much larger role to play in innovation than allowed in the economic model.  He discusses innovation imaginariums that may draw from a very broad set of individuals for advancing a new technology.  The central argument behind mass flourishing is that rapid rates of innovation, say that characterized the Jazz Age , cannot be understood by focusing only on scientists and engineers but results from pursuit of the good life by many in society.

Have a look at research on how the "Big Five" personality traits--openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeability and neuroticism or OCEAN relate to an individual's innovativeness. I link to two studies below.

Dear Piyush

I would not agree with your assumption. It is not that some people can innovate everywhere and some organizations can make everyone innovate. Rather, a fine mix of the two is a necessary condition. A seed germinates to its fruitful maturity only when  a suitable environment is around. The problem is matching the two: the man and the organization. One thing more: innovations are not continuous for a singular entity.

Piyush, One of the problems in answering your question is that we tend to know about, and do research on, successful innovating individuals and organizations.  ("Successful" in this context can be taken to mean both the usual growing in profits, size, etc. and, less commonly, even just surviving in business.) As a result, you will find evidence in the literature(s) of serially innovating individuals and organizations whose organizational cultures seem to generate innovations.  And, widening the perspective, there is evidence (for example in industrial districts) of innovative localities, regions and societies (see the System of Innovation literature).  In all these cases the relative innovativeness may be specific to a certain time period.   To summarise, it all depends on the literature you access: for individuals, it is the psychology literature; for organizations, you will find a great deal on organizational culture and innovation; for locationally specific innovation look in regional studies journals;  and for systems of innovation a great deal has been published in the economic sociology and evolutionary economics journals.
