Question about gender identity and facts concerning a person undergoing a sex change are not the type of questions that we engage with young children because they are not in a age to understand such questions.  When a person ask for a surgery for removing a tumor, Is it according to nature?  No in the sense that Nature does not provide such surgery.  People provide surgery.  Yes in the sense that everyone want to live and it is thus natural to request such human intervention.  If a person requests the painfull procedure of sex change, the person really is convinced that it is a good thing for her.  The concept of what is natural is in the realm of human affairs very very confused one given that what we collectively consider as appropriate came about through the history of human societies.  In some socieites only two gender identities are consider as acceptable but in many others, ancient and modern gender identities can be much more varied. Speaking of what is natural is a negation of the historical circumstances that made people saw that as unnatural in a specific society or acceptable into other ones.

The question is confusing, in that gender ideology does not necessarily relate to sex change issues. They are two orthogonal topics for discussion.

Certainly, children should be left to discover their own gender roles, and they seem entirely capable of doing so, without pocking and prodding by adults. I'm no sociologist, so anything I say here is just my belief and observation. Children will naturally take on the roles they find correct. And conversely, attempting to force one's own ideas of gender identity on children only leads to stress ... plus it makes the adult making such attempts seem pathetic.

Any ideas of sex change need to be addressed by the individual only, and only after childhood, for heaven's sake.

I have personally known one individual who did have a sex change, in adulthood, male to female. And I have witnessed two more, who "came out of the closet," in early adulthood. The latter are both gay men. And I am totally convinced that:

1. No one could have changed their minds. Attempting to do so is a quick way to alienate them. Plus, it makes the person attempting this seem clueless.

2. The gay guys have no interest in a sex change. The two topics are quite unrelated. Being a gay male does not equate to wanting to be female.

3. The one who did have a sex change operation, on the other hand, felt he was meant to be female. Again, there's no sensible way to argue about these things, with an adult who has made such a decision.

On the topic of sex change, it does not seem inconceivable that people may be born in the "wrong" body, for the way their brain is wired. Certainly, I never had any doubts at all on my own identity, so why should I assume that someone who feels he/she is in the "wrong body" is not equally certain of their intended identity? Or, do we really believe that "nature" never makes a mistake? Right.

Young children are not always equipped, as adults are, with the critical tools to analyse and probe information – what is presented as fact is often absorbed without question.

4. Puberty is not a disease and puberty-blocking hormones can be dangerous. Reversible or not, puberty- blocking hormones induce a state of disease – the absence of puberty – and inhibit growth and fertility in a previously biologically healthy child.6

5. According to the DSM-V, as many as 98% of gender confused boys and 88% of gender confused girls eventually accept their biological sex after naturally passing through puberty.5

6. Children who use puberty blockers to impersonate the opposite sex will require cross-sex hormones in late adolescence. Cross-sex hormones (testosterone and estrogen) are associated with dangerous health risks including but not limited to high blood pressure, blood clots, stroke and cancer.7,8,9,10

7. Rates of suicide are twenty times greater among adults who use cross-sex hormones and undergo sex reassignment surgery, even in Sweden which is among the most LGBQT – affirming countries.11 What compassionate and reasonable person would condemn young children to this fate knowing that after puberty as many as 88% of girls and 98% of boys will eventually accept reality and achieve a state of mental and physical health?

8. Conditioning children into believing a lifetime of chemical and surgical impersonation of the opposite sex is normal and healthful is child abuse. Endorsing gender discordance as normal via public education and legal policies will confuse children and parents, leading more children to present to “gender clinics” where they will be given puberty-blocking drugs. This, in turn, virtually ensures that they will “choose” a lifetime of carcinogenic and otherwise toxic cross-sex hormones, and likely consider unnecessary surgical mutilation of their healthy body parts as young adults.

Interesting topic. We worked with Men having Sex with Men and Transgender communities in Sri Lanka. My personal view based on experience is that the Social Learning Theory  is applicable for this case as well. It is possible to change the gender identity of a person during the adolescent based on the exposure and the experience of the person at childhood. However, I am NOT going to say "There is no biological factor".

All people are different.  No one should tell someone what is best for them.  From a scientific standpoint every person is different and yet every person is the same.  We can not pretend that in a population that has more than seven Billion subjects that there will not be a percent of those that are different sexually.  The question should be how do we help them realize their potential as part of our society.

Gender identity is not something a person decides.  At the time of early teenage years we gradually experience some sexual feeling towards other persons and it is not out of ideological discussion that we decide to experience this sexual attraction and not this other one.  We do not choose where we are born nor the social context nor our gender identity.  It is not OK to  hate someone for something that person did not choose to be such as biological traits, religion, and gender.  We can disagree with each other choices in terms of opinions and can debate about it.  

They are things we do not decide such as sociopathic incline or sexual attraction towards children.  But here the society cannot have any tolerance towards sexual abuse of children.  But in the case of sexual behaviors between adults that respect each other whatever is the nature of these sexual behaviors, given that they arm no ones and are the expression of love, society should not try to have a normative approach towards them.  

What trouble me most presently in terms of sexual behaviors with potential to arm children is the proliferation of extreme degrading pornography on the internet.

I have read and hear many testimonies of people resenting for having being indoctrinated on accepting an homosexual conduct as a normal conduct. They were deceived and introduced in many risky behavior: sexual transmited sickness, depression, lonely and suicide. There are studies demographics in Canada that show how the homosexual active persons live 20 years less that their contemporary heterosexual.

I have noticed a biased presentation about these matters on favour of homosexuality, trans gender, change of sex, the "homosexual marriage", homosexual adoption of children, et al, by the Media.

I have noticed that some people that is very happy after abandoning the homosexual lifestyle, after having obtained, with sensitive and competent professional help, a rich heterosexual family life, are rejected and censured because their example ilustrate a hope of reversion from this symtoms of same-sex attraction. I have many friends that are homosexual.  Many of my friends I knew they were homosexual before they knew they were.  It is not a condition and life span has nothing to do with discrimination.  No one had to like what other do or how they are made but we all have to live and understand one another. 

If some think that this is a joke because of some archaic religious belief that is sad.  The religious leader that I know and love ate and walked with this crowd and told them to love one another as I have loved you.  He also said it is not your place to judge. 

There are people that would take freedom from others in order to make them feel moral and right and that is sad.

If this world were to all just have kids and par up into the neat little families two by two and have their 3 or 4 children we would all starve to death for lake of food but maybe we would be morally right to die for that.

I have four children.  My youngest is 19 year old and last summer she told us that she was  homosexual.  She began to knew it around 14 years old and found it very hard to accept herself.  She was afraid to tell us for all these years.  My wife took a few months to accept this new reality but now she is accustomed to the idea and we both love our daughter as much as before and wish her the best life.  She is a very bright and has a good nature and hope to do good in the world and eventually have a family with children.

I also have four children that I love.  And I do not worry about them because we teach them to love everyone.  Even the ones you do not like.

If the sex change is ordered by severe problems in the gender of a person, then I believe that this change is inevitable and acceptable. But if this will of change is dictaded by a confusing and false ideology, it would bring only problems and I think it wiould harm the feelings of the children.

The sex is reality, the gender is ideology. The sex is not elected by the own person, the ideology pretends that the gender is elegible.

The "third sex" is not an ideology, but a fact. This idea that people are "buying into a culture" or "being enticed" or "being brainwashed" into homosexuality is ridiculous. The Native Americans held the berdache as sacred. There was no "culture of homosexuality" in which they were enticed! I was talking about the transposition of sexual identity and homosexuality. There are two non-hermaphrodite "transgenders". Men or women who like members of their own sex, or people who believe that they are of the opposite sex from that which they were born. Mariano, I am not an expert in that field, but perhaps others can provide insight. Ideology is manifest in many ways. One definition in Funk and Wagnalls' dictionary is "The ideas or manner of thinking characteristic of an individual or group".

We have had several incidences in the United States where children and young adults who were attracted to the same sex or thought of themselves as the opposite sex mentally who have been subjected to what is termed "conversion therapy" by their families or even their church. This is essentially locking them away in "retreats" and brainwashing them into thinking that the feelings they have are wrong or the work of the Devil. This, therefore, is subjecting the ideology of the group upon the individual in order to correct or make to conform to a perceived abnormality. While we are more accepting now, in the past it was society as a whole whose ideology was imposed on the gay, lesbian, and transgender.

As for the people who feel that they are the opposite sex inside, there has been at least one court case where a child successfully sued to be recognized as the opposite sex.

Personally, I care not what others do, it is none of my business. For me to say I know what a person is feeling or should feel inside is wrong. That is the purview of God.

Given that children are not in a position to decide for themself on such important matter as sex changes then I do not find advisable for any children or any authority to take such decision impacting the whole life of the person.  Only an adult that is mentally sane and that is fully informed can be allowed to take such a decision for himself / herself.  On the same logic I do not find that the practice of Female genital mutilation and male genital mutilation are advisable on non-adult persons. The most frequent male genital mutilation, circumcision, has not in general as much consequences as the female genital mutilation and I agree that it is not a big deal when it is done in proper sanitation conditions.

I think that what is bad for children health, is bad for adults health almost secure too.

Gender ideology is false for saying that there is not natural difference between a man and a woman.

“The American College of Pediatricians urges educators and legislators to reject all policies that condition children to accept as normal a life of chemical and surgical impersonation of the opposite sex,” the statement issued on Feb. 2 stated. “Facts – not ideology – determine reality.”

The statement – written by Dr. Michelle A. Cretella, president of the American College of Pediatricians, Dr. Quentin Van Meter, vice president of the American College of Pediatricians and a pediatric endocrinologist, and Dr. Paul McHugh, university distinguished service professor of psychiatry at Johns Hopkins Medical School and the former psychiatrist in chief at Johns Hopkins Hospital – cites eight reasons why “gender ideology” instead of treatment based on biological facts is harmful to children.

The first point is, “Human sexuality is an objective biological binary trait: ‘XY’ and ‘XX’ are genetic markers of health – not genetic markers of a disorder,” with the purpose of male and female being “the reproduction and flourishing of our species.” It notes “exceedingly rare exceptions of sexual differentiation,” which are disorders but do not represent a “third sex.”

Secondly, “No one is born with a gender. Everyone is born with a biological sex. Gender (an awareness and sense of oneself as male or female) is a sociological and psychological concept; not an objective biological one.”

The statement added that self-awareness develops over time and can be “derailed” by the experiences and information a child receives from infancy forward. Further, no matter what sex a person imagines themselves to be, they remain either a biological male or a biological female.

The third point is that, “A person’s belief that he or she is something they are not is, at best, a sign of confused thinking” or the child could suffer from gender dysphoria -- “an objective psychological problem … that lies in the mind not the body, and it should be treated as such.”

Mayer and McHugh also find that homosexuals and other "non-heterosexuals" are markedly more likely to have suffered abuse in childhood, and dramatically more prone to "adverse health and mental-health outcomes" as adults.

For example, the attempted-suicide rate among people who identify as "transgender" is estimated at 41%-- eight times the rate for the overall population.  Sex-change surgery does not improve those odds, the authors report. A false ideology needs to be impossed as in a totalitary regimen. Otherwise it should not have any trascendence in the society.

Like any ideology - has the right to exist, provided that it is not directed against another person or ideology. Evil is doing big politics with this ideology, to use as a tool of conflict between human beings, prohibit or impose people to certain behavior and feelings.

If someone feels the need to change sex - let them do it for your own happiness.

In a bold yet compassionate medically sound move, the American College of Pediatricians (ACPeds), in eight clear statements, has proclaimed that modern gender ideology harms children. They affirmed that the chromosomal markers of gender, XY and XX, are genetic markers of health and not genetic markers of a disorder. Those “who identify as ‘feeling like the opposite sex’ or ‘somewhere in between’ do not comprise a third sex,” rather, “they remain biological men or biological women.”

Furthermore, they stated that the exceptionally rare disorders of sexual differentiation (DSD) are documented medical disorders and do not constitute a third gender. If a boy believes he is a girl or a girl believes she is a boy then an “objective psychological problem exists that lies in the mind not the body,” declared the ACPeds. Gender dysphoria, “is a recognized mental disorder in the most recent edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association (DSM-V).” Gender dysphoria should be treated as a mental disorder and not a physical disorder.

According to the DSM-V, 98% of gender confused boys and 88% of gender confused girls will accept their biological sex after the natural process of puberty. Hormone blockers used to set a child on a path to gender reassignment surgery block the natural process of puberty and induces a disease in an otherwise healthy child. Absence of puberty and stunted growth are considered diseases that need treatment.

Cross sex hormones used in young adults and throughout the lives of those who receive gender reassignment surgery are known carcinogens with additional health risks of high blood pressure and blood clots. While many claim that gender reassignment surgery and living life as the opposite of one’s biological sex is the cure for gender dysphoria, the America Academy of Pediatricians confirm that “rates of suicide are twenty times greater among adults who use cross-sex hormones and undergo sex reassignment surgery, even in Sweden which is among the most LGBQT – affirming countries.”

The American College of Pediatricians equates “conditioning children into believing a lifetime of chemical and surgical impersonation of the opposite sex is normal and healthful,” as child abuse.

The medical facts are clear and consistent. Humans are born with a biological sex that does not change. While there are some documented disorders, they do not constitute a third sex. People who feel they are the opposite of their biological gender do not constitute a third sex. Gender reassignment surgery is not the cure to gender dysphoria, yet it does create a lifetime of physical and psychological problems. The American College of Pediatricians is compassionate in that it places the health and wellness of children above modern popular ideas about gender fluidity.

Nobody would voluntary decide to go through the painfull procedures of sex change without very serious and profound desire and need for it.  It is not an ideology that would provide such motivation.  And who are we to judge from the outside if a person desire are justified.  The desires and needs are just there and nobody have decided to have them or could decide not to have them.  Each of us has a special destiny, a special body, a special social circumstance and just do our best in our particular circumstances.

A person’s belief that he or she is something they are not is, at best, a sign of confused thinking. When an otherwise healthy biological boy believes he is a girl, or an otherwise healthy biological girl believes she is a boy, an objective psychological problem exists that lies in the mind not the body, and it should be treated as such. These children suffer from gender dysphoria. Gender dysphoria (GD), formerly listed as Gender Identity Disorder (GID), is a recognized mental disorder in the most recent edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association (DSM-V).5 The psychodynamic and social learning theories of GD/GID have never been disproved.

Puberty is not a disease and puberty-blocking hormones can be dangerous. Reversible or not, puberty- blocking hormones induce a state of disease – the absence of puberty – and inhibit growth and fertility in a previously biologically healthy child.

According to the DSM-V, as many as 98% of gender confused boys and 88% of gender confused girls eventually accept their biological sex after naturally passing through puberty.

Children who use puberty blockers to impersonate the opposite sex will require cross-sex hormones in late adolescence. Cross-sex hormones (testosterone and estrogen) are associated with dangerous health risks including but not limited to high blood pressure, blood clots, stroke and cancer.

Rates of suicide are twenty times greater among adults who use cross-sex hormones and undergo sex reassignment surgery, even in Sweden which is among the most LGBQT – affirming countries.11 What compassionate and reasonable person would condemn young children to this fate knowing that after puberty as many as 88% of girls and 98% of boys will eventually accept reality and achieve a state of mental and physical health?

Conditioning children into believing that a lifetime of chemical and surgical impersonation of the opposite sex is normal and healthful is child abuse. Endorsing gender discordance as normal via public education and legal policies will confuse children and parents, leading more children to present to “gender clinics” where they will be given puberty-blocking drugs. This, in turn, virtually ensures that they will “choose” a lifetime of carcinogenic and otherwise toxic cross-sex hormones, and likely consider unnecessary surgical mutilation of their healthy body parts as young adults.

I respect Pope Francis.  After three ultra conservative pope, he is a breath of fresh air.  But his opinions , like the opinions of any pope are not gospel to me and I am not a follower of any pope.  I listen to his opinion because he is someone of some wisdom. I listen and then I think about it and make my own mind.  A follower does not need to think since he is told what the result of thinking should be.  No need to think for a follower.

I respect to all the Popes, dear Louis. As all Pope is a shepherd of souls, all Catholic believer is a follower of the Pope. Truely the Good Shepherd is Jesus, but Jesus gave us to the Pope as a visible foundation of our faith. And for being a follower one does not need to leave of thinking.

I do not think that Jesus gave us a  Pope or even remotly conceive such notion.  The first such leader of all the bishops were not even christian but Constantine, a pagan roman emperor.    In the ancient christianity, there were bishops , and among one of them, not the more important, the bishop of Rome.  It is a long and complicated political story that explains why the bishop of Rome was attributed in the western part of Europe the special status of Pope. A myth was created and some still believe in it. And the history of corruption of many of these popes is horrifying. One even declared the american native as non-humans so that the spaniards could enslave, torture and kill them and still be good christian.  This pope was a follower of Satan, not of Jesus.   It has nothing to do with the story of Jesus.  Jesus would be totally amazed by this myth as he would be horrified by some many of his followers.

In other words: If adolescents are left alone to grow in the biological sex they were assigned at birth, most will accept that gender.

I do not agree with Pope Francis on this point.  I accept other forms of marriage than tradional ones.  I do not see how accepting the marriage between two mans who love each other and want to live together the rest of their life and vow to do so (marriage) as in any way being negative for traditional couples.  Why is it necessary for them that they would be the only model of marriage/love?  What negative impact on anyone else such a choice may have?  Marriage is the union of two persons who love each other and decides to live together the rest of their life.  Why such expanded definition of marriage which is an expansion of love could be negative?  The real threat to traditional marriage is the promotion of unloving human relations, the promotion of egoistic form of human relations.  Living together without any committment to continue to do so, any commitment to love each other as long as it is fun is a promotion of unloving human relationship, mutual exploitation and thus against real marriage in its extended definition.  Restricting an extension of marriage to all form of loving living will automatically make more room for short term egocentric fun relationship and so be totally unproductive of love relationships.  Love extend by love.  Love dimiship through hate.  The hate campaign against the extension of love relatinship goes against love and thus against God.

I acknowledged the fact that the Pope do not agree with my position and opposed it.   

He is for a traditional restrictive definition of marriage.  Maybe the next pope will have another opinion.  As a catholic, I do not find pleasant to be of an different opinion than the Pope but ''c'est la vie.''.

In the life one can be mistaken but one can always to correct the own life according to the natural laws and the God's will. Both ones are defended by the Popes and in the Chuch. The Magistery of the Church is to be believed, it is not a simple opinion but doctrine of the church.

I think that what is not correct is to invent a theory to justify a mistaken life, and more if this theory can harm to others, as innocent children and others. The proof of that gender ideology is false is that it does not recognize the sexual reality given for the nature. A choice does not change natural laws.

The Pope Francis has condemned the gender ideology also in the Encyclical Laudato si, and in the Apostolic Exhortation Amoris laetitia.

An encyclical is doctrine of the church and must be believed by the men of good will.

We can reiterate each other position on this question but it is obvious at this point that we simply agree.  I gave my reasons.  You gave yours.  If you have anything new to offer as an argument, I will listen and tell you what I think.  As I told you before, ''a must be believe'' does not exist for me.  I first need to be convinced AND THEN ONLY I believe.  Must be believe or follow is for 2 years old when they cannot do better but I expect a five year old to begin exercise some judgement in the adoption of beliefs.  Do not confuse this philosophy to another philosphy that I firmly oppose: Scientism which naively reject beliefs altogether and all form of culture, including religion based on narrow perspective thay they think is supported by science.  They are the exact mirror of the irresponsible religious followers.  I reject both of these positions.
